Can A Massage Chair Help You Lose Weight?

If there's one thing people can agree on, it's that being healthy.

There are a lot of health threats the average Austrailian citizen is concerned about. Diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure are some of the most pressing health problems people face.

All of these problems are different, but there's an even more troublesome health crisis the country is facing: obesity.  People are looking for ways to lose weight in any way the can.

There are no substitutes for a proper diet and exercise, but some think that a massage chair could be one the latest (and most comfortable) tools in the fight against obesity.

The true obesity problem

According to a study done by the Austrailian Bureau of Statistics, from 2014-2015 63.4% of adults in the country were classified as overweight or obese.  The amounts to a little over 11 million people.

Some people think of obesity as an aesthetic problem, but carrying extra weight can be seriously detrimental to your health.

Cardiovascular health is important, and unfortunately, a lot of Australian citizens struggle with it.  Cardiovascular disease now causes the most deaths in Austrailia, and it's estimated to affect 22% of citizens.

On average there are 280 new cases of diabetes in Austrailia every day, that's about one person every five minutes.

These illness are bad enough by themselves, but they can also cause other problems.

Blindness, nerve damage, and in extreme cases limb amputation have been associated with diabetes.  People with heart disease are at a higher risk for stroke and heart attack.

Some people have a genetic predisposition to these problems, but these problems are also extremely common in people that are overweight or obese.

Since weight loss can help a variety of health problems, people are thinking of different ways to shed extra pounds.

Some people may think that losing weight by simply sitting is absurd, but if you use a massage chair you could be passively losing weight.

How a massage chair can help you lose weight

We'd like to make it clear that simply sitting in a massage chair for an hour a day isn't going to instantly melt away weight.

Massage therapy has long been used as an alternative weight loss method, but it's most successful when it's paired with a healthy diet and good amount of physical activity.

That being said, a massage chair can help you lose weight in a variety of ways.

Decrease your stress

It may seem strange to talk about stress when we're focused on weight loss, but feelings of stress and anxiety can significantly affect our health.

According to a study done by the Australian Psychological Society, 40% of people are stressed about trying to stay healthy.

Sometimes stress can make people lose weight, but more often than not it actually makes it easier to pack on the pounds.  The main reason why stress can hurt weight loss has to do with hormone levels.

When you're feeling stressed your body releases cortisol as a response.  The hormone helps make sure that you can stay alert and energized in a stressful situation.

Back in our hunter-gatherer times, this response was helpful.

Stress usually meant you were in some kind of imminent physical danger, your body needed an extra boost of energy to outrun predators or other threats. Today that extra hormone can be troublesome when you're trying to lose weight.

If you're a stress eater, cortisol could be the cause of your overeating trouble. Cortisol can deregulate the hormones that help control your hunger.

When your body is stressed it can also make an extra effort to hang on to visceral fat.

Visceral fat is the kind of fat you associate with weight gain.  It's also more problematic because this is the kind of fat that surrounds your organs and can cause more damage.

Massage therapy can do wonders for stress.  You'll feel anxiety and life stresses melt away once you take a seat.  A massage chair can also help you relax by releasing tension from your muscles.

Improve your muscle tone

Since we just mentioned muscles, now seems like a good time to mention how a massage chair can benefit them.

You may not be too concerned about your muscles if you're focused on losing weight.  But having healthy muscles can help you speed up the weight loss process.

A deep, penetrating massage can help improve your muscle tone. Relaxed muscles are more flexible, and flexible muscles are easy to work out.

Flexible muscles can grow stronger, and strong muscles can help you quickly burn calories.

Get rid of fluid

If you're concerned about losing weight you've heard about the trouble fluids can cause.

When we first start to lose weight a lot of the pounds we shed are "water weight".

Our bodies are made up of an astounding amount of water, and we're built to hold onto as much fluid as possible to avoid dehydration and to stay healthy.

Relaxing in a comfortable massage chair helps keeps our fluids moving and can help your body shed unneeded fluids fast.

A good massage chair can also help your body with flushing out toxins.  Cleanses have become a popular way for people to remove toxins from bodies.

There's a way to cleanse toxins without having to resort to an extreme cleanse. Simply use a massage chair to stimulate your lymph.

Literally get rid of fat

We've already mentioned that a deep massage can help tone muscles, but there's a more direct weight loss benefit that a massage chair can bring.

Some people believe that the vibrations can literally help break up fat.  That movement can help make fat capsules burst.

Losing weight the easy way

As you can see, a massage chair can do a lot to passively promote weight loss.

It can help decrease your levels of stress which can not only aid your weight loss journey but also improve your overall health.

A massage chair can help tone muscles, get rid of extra fluid, and even help physically destroy fat.

Despite all of the things it can do, it's important to remember that you'll see better results from pairing chair usage with good diet and exercise habits.

You don't have to switch to only eating salads and spending your free time at the gym if you want to lose weight.  There are plenty of small things you can do.

Count calories

Counting calories may seem like a chore, but it's the easiest way to lose weight with the least amount of work.

Losing weight isn't a complicated science, many people think it boils down to one simple belief: calories in, calories out.

Caloric energy is what keeps us going every day.  If you consume more calories than you burn, you're going to put on weight.

Counting calories can help ensure that you're staying within a range that can help promote weight loss.

When you start counting calories you'll develop a clear picture of your daily eating habits and could see areas for improvement.

The average woman should consume about 2000 calories a day, and the average man should consume about 2500.  If you're trying to lose weight consider cutting calorie intake by about 300-500 every day.

Stay active with something fun

You want a way to burn calories, but you hate spending your time at the gym.

You don't have to turn into a gym rat if you want to burn calories.  Working out doesn't have to be all treadmills and weights, it can be fun and simple.

If you love spending nights at the club, consider taking a zumba or dance class.  If you like to swim take a few extra laps in the pool.

If you're feeling adventurous, try out some yoga if you want to burn calories and improve flexibility.

If you want to start small, commit yourself to taking a brisk walk for 10 minutes a day.  See the sights in your neighborhood, get some fresh air, and burn some calories.

Drink water

Sugary drinks like soda and fruit juice can taste great, but they're also a sneaky calorie and fat delivery system.  They can also be bad for your teeth and can contribute to diabetes.

If you want to lose weight the easy way, the simplest way to start is by drinking more water.

We've already mentioned that the human body is mostly made up of water.  You need a lot of fluids to stay hydrated, and nothing beats water when it comes to hydration.

Water has the added benefit of actually helping you burn calories.  Every time you consume something (whether its food or water), your body has to work to process it.

The whole process is called diet-induced thermogenesis, and it can burn a serious amount of calories.

According to a study done by the Journal of Endocrinology & Metabolism, drinking 16 ounces of water helped to temporarily spiked participants' metabolic rate by an impressive 30%.

Water can also help reduce your appetite. Sometimes when you're feeling hunger pains your body isn't saying it needs food, it needs more water.

The next time you feel hungry drink 8 ounces of water and see how you feel.
